Victorian Corsetry

IMG_0855

As most of you know, I took a little break from blogging after the death of my beloved Grandmother. I just took a while to totally shut off from normal life and mourn for her. Although my heart is still aching, my blog is very much an important part of my life so I feel it is now the right time to get back to it and even dedicate it to her memory!
For my come back post I wanted to show you something very special to me and that is the second item of clothing that I designed and made myself as part of my fashion course.
( I showed you my first skirt HERE)
Just before Christmas I opted to take part in a Victorian Corsetry course with the very talented Sandra Thomson who came over from Glasgow to share her skills with us!
From initial pattern drafting to the finished product, she taught us to make the entire corset ourselves from scratch.
I wanted to veer away from the modern day preconception of corsets - people think of sexy silks, Moulin Rouge or Burlesque, and although these are beautiful items, I wanted to create something a little  more unique that I would be likely to wear myself.  I decided on this camouflage print as I felt it could be subtle and classy with a funky edge.
In the photographs I have the corset tied comfortably so that I can breathe naturally but as it is designed like the real Victorian Corsets, when tied properly, it takes a full 3 inches off my waist!
A tempting prospect for any women but one that is not entirely comfortable…
In fact, when I tried it out for myself, it made me thankful that I was not born in the Victorian era in which wearing one was a must!
I hope you like my design and I would like to say a sincere thank you to everyone who supported me over the last week throughout my grief and for continuing to support my blog, even whilst I was MIA. For that I am eternally grateful!
